Deep within the enchanting rolling hills, resided a young website shepherd. His being was mostly pure, and unsophisticated. His primary duty was mainly to care for his herd of sheep.
Their gentle baas and the rustling of the breezes among the single tree on the mountaintop were his only co-dwellers. Day upon day, watching over his wards imbued in him a feeling of quiet fulfillment.
Yet, there were the occasional moments of solitude, when the shepherd boy would long for company. In one such instance from sheer boredom, the shepherd boy orchestrated a naughty plot.
Tales of wolves prowling on sheep had long been circulating in the village. So, the boy chose to used this fear and played a prank on the townsfolk.
One morning he raced into the village screaming “Wolf! There is a wolf preying on my sheep!” The terrified villagers sprinted up the hills to help but discovered no beast.
The boy laughed at the confusion on their faces. This game laughed for a few days more. However, one day, a real wolf did charge at the herd. The shepherd boy raced for aid screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one showed up.
Frustrated and alone, the boy struggled against the wolf but managed to rescue only few of his flock. Devastated, he returned to the village only to receive a scolding on honesty and the results of crying wolf.
The tale of this shepherd boy has been handed down generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the importance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the perils of crying wolf. Moreover, it emphasizes how trust once violated, is difficult to reclaim. It's a story as pertinent today as it was anciently.
